Located approximately 1,300 light-years away in the constellation Cepheus, NGC 7023, better known as the Iris Nebula, is one of the finest reflection nebulae visible in the northern sky. Unlike the well-known red emission nebulae, the Iris Nebula does not generate its own light. Its distinctive blue glow is produced by the reflection and scattering of the light from the young star HD 200775 by microscopic interstellar dust particles. This is the very same physical process that makes Earth's daytime sky appear blue. Surrounding the bright central nebula are extensive clouds of dark dust and molecular gas. These intricate structures trace the complex environment of the interstellar medium, where stellar radiation and powerful winds continuously reshape the surrounding material. This image highlights the striking contrast between the delicate blue reflection nebula and the dark dust lanes that envelop it, offering a glimpse into one of the most beautiful stellar nurseries in our galaxy.
