IC 405, commonly known as the Flaming Star Nebula, is a vast cloud of gas and dust located in the constellation Auriga, at a distance of about 1,500 light-years. It is primarily illuminated by AE Aurigae, a massive and extremely hot O-type star whose intense ultraviolet radiation excites the surrounding gas, causing the nebula to glow. What makes this object particularly remarkable is the nature of AE Aurigae itself: it is a runaway star, ejected several million years ago from a multiple-star system in the Orion region. As it plows through a dense interstellar cloud, it ignites IC 405, leaving behind a luminous trail—like a flame frozen in space. IC 405 is both an emission nebula and a reflection nebula. Ionized hydrogen produces deep red hues, while interstellar dust scatters blue light, creating a rich and dramatic color contrast. This object beautifully illustrates the powerful interaction between massive stars and the interstellar medium, a fundamental process shaping galactic structure and evolution.
